A Journey Unrealized
During the wedding rite, the couple's godparents hold crowns over their heads, crowning them as rulers of a new household, but also crowning them as martyrs to one another. They're expected to die to one anothers' wills. Every Orthodox Christian is expected to be a martyr - whether that is red martyrdom by the sword, or white martyrdom by the abandonment of our ego. Marriage is itself a martyrdom to the spouse.
